From one edition to another the position of the rectangle that is missing in the drawing differs, corresponding each time to the number of the copy in the print run: in copy number 1 the first square is missing, in copy number 2 the second square is missing, etc.
Städtisches Museum, Mönchengladbach
The print was commissioned from the artist in March 1977 by the Museumsverein Mönchengladbach as the annual print edition (”Jahresgabe”) for 1978, destined for sale to support the activities of the Städtisches Museum, Mönchengladbach, directed at the time by Johannes Cladders. The Städtisches Museum had hosted a solo exhibition of Paolini's work from 3 March to 11 April 1977.
The regular grid pattern of one hundred rectangles outlined in black corresponds to the ensemble of copies that make up the print run of the work. Each rectangle is in fact marked, at the bottom left, by a progressive number in red, from 1 to 100, analogous to the autograph numbering, in the same position, of each copy of the print. The modular grid presents a missing unit, corresponding to the number of the copy involved (in copy number 1/100 the first square is missing, in copy 2/100 the second square is missing, and so on). Each sheet of the print run thus reflects the ensemble, at the same time indicating itself by subtraction, via the missing square.
The print is part of a group of works with the same theme and the same title, developed on canvas and on paper in 1977-78 (cf. GPO-0352, GPO-0353, GPO-0368, GPO-0369; cf. also the print Novero, 1987, GPE-0061).
