The print was produced by the Galleria Marilena Bonomo, Bari, on the occasion of the publication of the book by Paolini titled Come non detto. The book was released in relation to the solo show that was inaugurated on 18 April 1990: the compositions in verse by the author are based, in fact, on the titles of the seven works exhibited. The subject of the print was also reproduced on the invitation to the exhibition.
Giulio Paolini, Come non detto (Bari: Galleria Marilena Bonomo, 1990). 25.7 x 18 cm, six sheets 49.8 x 34.9 cm folded in four, collected in a soft cover. Seven writings in verse by the author, reproduction of the drawing making up the edition. Limited edition of 500 numbered copies, the first 100 of which include the print edition.
The colophon of the book includes information regarding the printer, context of production, type of paper, edition size, place and date of printing (Turin, April 1990). Printed numbering bottom centre.
The drawing reproduced on the twice folded sheet represents a hand intent on using the tip of a pencil to mark the centre of the face of the wristwatch on the other wrist, and at the same time the centre of the sheet.
As the title tells us, the drawing does not reveal anything: the gesture of the hand that holds the pencil is resolved in a de facto nothing, i.e. the hand does not mark a specific hour, even though it aims the pencil straight to the centre. In other words, in the focal point time remains suspended: everything is still possible, but nothing happens.
The print inaugurates a series of variations on the same theme (cf. among the works on paper GPC-0778, GPC-0874, from GPC-0894 to GPC-0898, GPC-0953, GPC-1010; cf. also the print GPE-0135). A further line of development led to the series of the meridians, further delved into in some large-scale works (GPO-0686, GPO-0733, GPO-0739). The shape of the artist’s right hand intent on drawing harkens back to the subject of Paolini's first print edition, made in 1967 (GPE-0001).
