The work was produced by the publisher of limited edition artworks Jörg Schellmann, Cologne, for the project Wall Works. Conducted from 1992 to 2009, it includes 52 wall editions conceived by 40 international contemporary artists: Darren Almond, Richard Artschwager, Daniel Buren, Hanne Darboven, Günther Förg, Dan Flavin, Sylvie Fleury, Gilbert & George, Liam Gillick, Thomas Grünfeld, Peter Halley, Mona Hatoum, Damien Hirst, Donald Judd, Imi Knoebel, Terence Koh, Joseph Kosuth, Jannis Kounellis, Sherrie Levine, Sol LeWitt, Vera Lutter, Gerhard Merz, Sarah Morris, Paul Morrison, Matt Mullican, Tony Oursler, Nam June Paik, Giulio Paolini, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Robin Rhode, Reiner Ruthenbeck, Julian Schnabel, Cindy Sherman, Santiago Sierra, Haim Steinbach, Rudolph Stingel, Rosemarie Trockel, Kara Walker, Andy Warhol, and Lawrence Weiner.
The two plinths, must be positioned close to the wall, ideally white in colour, and 30 cm apart (i.e. equal to the width of each plinth).
The two halves of the plaster cast of a classical head of Hera face one another – vis-à-vis as the title tells us – on two plinths up against the wall.
The multiple is inscribed in the developments of the theme that began in 1975 with Mimesi, based on the exchange of gazes between two identical faces questioning the very existence of the work and of its manifestation via the gaze (among the multiples see GPE-0019, and among the sculptures GPO-0283).
A variant made during the same year, with a male head of Alexander the Great, was created as an original work in seven copies (GPO-0707), while other more recent versions include a drawing on the wall or on a primed canvas (cf. Vis-à-vis, 2002, GPO-0875, and the series Vis-à-vis (Amazzone), 2019, GPO-1087, GPO-1088, GPO-1089, as well as the variant Vis-à-vis (Kore), 2020, GPO-1090).
