Roberto Giudici, Varese

The print was commissioned from the artist by Edizioni Colophon, Belluno – founded in 1985 and directed by Egidio Fiorin – for the book by Gillo Dorfles titled Nascosti intrecci, published on the occasion of his ninetieth anniversary. The seven poems by the author are accompanied by the same number of prints – one for each poem – created by Enrico Baj, Agostino Bonalumi, Enrico Castellani, Jannis Kounellis, Mimmo Paladino, Giulio Paolini, and Arnaldo Pomodoro. Paolini's work is matched with Dorfles’ poem Divenire piante.

Gillo Dorfles, Nascosti intrecci (Belluno: Proposte d’Arte Colophon, 2002). 50.5 x 35 cm, nine bi-folios collected in a soft cover in white card stock, with a die-cut dust jacket, inserted in a plexiglas case. Foreword by Ferruccio De Bortoli, seven poems by the author and seven prints by various artists. Limited edition of 115 copies numbered and signed by the author.

The colophon of the book includes information regarding the edition size, individual works (captions with technique and printer), publisher, date of printing (“nel giorno di S. Pammachio dell’A.D. 2002”), and copyright (© Proposte d’Arte Colophon). Numbering and author’s signature bottom centre.

The print reproduces a facsimile version of Una poesia, in which the letters making up the title are transcribed in black ink, at regular intervals, on a blank sheet of paper. The original sheet is part of a group of works made between 1966 and 1972 on canvas and on paper (among the prints cf. GPE-0002).
The choice to reproduce a copy of
Una poesia as a contribution to the volume published on the occasion of Gillo Dorfles' ninetieth birthday harkens back to Paolini's first encounter with the art critic, on the occasion of the solo exhibition at the Galleria dell’Ariete in Milan in April 1966. According to Paolini, the exhibition also included the work reproduced in the print, “which I remember drew the attention of Gillo Dorfles, the generous and kind host of the opening ceremony.”1.

1 G. Paolini in a letter to Edigio Fiorin, 22 November 2001, copy held in the artist's archive. The work on paper has not as yet been documented by any other form of proof, and awaits identification.
