The book is part of the series Pli selon pli, created by the Paris art dealer and publisher Yvon Lambert in 2017; the title of the series comes from a composition by Pierre Boulez, Pli selon pli, portrait de Mallarmé (1957). Paolini's project is the tenth publication in the series, preceded by the works of Ethel Adnan, David Horvitz, Giuseppe Penone, Annette Messager, Lawrence Weiner, Robert Barry, Nathalie Du Pasquier, Cyprien Gaillard, and Quentin Lefranc. The books all share the same format, binding, and edition size.
Dark grey full-cloth binding, on the front board white label with titles in grey (author, title), and white label on the inside back board with the colophon, closed format 32.2 x 23 cm. The accordion folded print is bound to the cover with two stitches.
Includes information regarding the published series, type of paper, printer, edition size, date of printing (December 2019), and publisher. Signature bottom centre.
When the work is open, the four panels of the sheet folded like an accordion reproduce two drawings, which are askew to each other, of that same sheet. At the centre, the gilt frame applied by collage encompasses a similar drawing of panels fitted one inside the other, echoing the central fold of the sheet.
As the title tells us – in the sense of a labyrinthine tangle – the multiple offers a game of reflections and duplications of its own image, which leads the gaze to lose Itself in between the folds, in the illusions of the drawing.
