Studio Marconi, Milan

Tipostampa, Turin

The print is part of a portfolio produced by Studio Marconi, Milan, on the occasion of the group show Fotomedia held at the Rotonda della Besana, Milan, from 24 March to 13 April 1975. The portfolio includes lithographs by the twelve artists participating in the show: Vincenzo Agnetti, Carlo Massimo Asnaghi, Gianni Bertini, Bruno Di Bello, Ketty La Rocca, Elio Mariani, Giulio Paolini, Claudio Parmiggiani, Luca Patella, Mario Schifano, Aldo Tagliaferro, and Franco Vaccari.

The print was originally contained, along with eleven other lithographs, in a plastic pocket, with no accessory sheets.

The black and white photographic image represents at the centre a hand holding a rectangular white surface – as if it were a playing card – in turn inscribed in a second blank square, held down by another hand.
The French title
Solitaire is a reference to the card game of the same name, for one player, expressed by the artist tautologically: the hand is limited to present the gesture of showing, without revealing anything; the playing card has no image on it, the sheet is (still) untouched.
The motif of the hand showing a blank surface was used in numerous formulations developed on paper between 1968 (cf. GPC-0139) and 1979 (cf. in particular GPC-0139, GPC-0388).
The original collage made in 1974 on which the print is based is documented in the online Catalogue Raisonné of the works on paper at number GPC-0354.
