Suite No. 3

Photo prints applied to paper

Two sheets 35 x 50 cm each

Signed, titled and dated on the verso of the second sheet, centre: “Giulio Paolini / Suite n. 3 / 1976”

Autograph numbering on the verso of the second sheet, centre

9 in Arabic numerals from 1/9 to 9/9

Self-produced by the artist

The two plates, individually framed without a passepartout, must be arranged close together, at a distance equal to that between the two paintings reproduced in the plate to the right.

The first plate is a reproduction of a view of the room of the Pergamon Altar, at the Pergamon Museum in Berlin, with several visitors. In the second plate, the same image is doubled and observed by other viewers inside another display space. From one plate to the next, the multiplication of the museum room in Berlin follows a gradual reduction in scale, as if to suggest a perspective of extension that is potentially oriented towards infinity.
The numbering in the title includes these two plates in a group of works – which began with
Suite n. 1, 1974 (GPO-0277) and continued with the print edition Suite n. 2, 1975 (GPE-0018) – whose common denominator is duplication by means of a succession or suite of the same initial image. The iconographic subject of the print was also formulated in a version on canvas produced during the same year (GPO-0332) and in a version on paper (GPC-0444) which is distinguished by the application of the photographs on two slightly smaller sheets featuring holes along the outer vertical sides.
The theme of the viewer in the museum context, joined with the idea of multiplication, is reiterated in the work titled
Eco, which was made during the same period (GPO-0339, GPO-0341).
