The print was commissioned from the artist by the Unione Piemontese Sviluppo Edilizio (UPSE), Turin, as a Chtistmas gift for its members.

The drawing of a room with two doorways in the background and a floor marked by a perspectival grid features at the centre the layout of a modular structure, based on the multiplication of the format and the diagonals of Disegno geometrico (GPO-0001).1 The structure houses inside three different architectural plates: at the top, a montage of heterogeneous monuments ranging from classical antiquity to the modern age; in the middle and in the foreground a small pavilion in a rock garden, and in the middle ground several monumental fountains; at the bottom, in the foreground a church located in a natural landscape and in the middle ground several architectural elements. As the French title suggests, the three scenic landscapes invite the viewer to "take a stroll" amidst artefacts and settings from various eras and of various kinds.
In a figurative sense the modular structure represents the potential container of any representation possible, a sort of “hortus clausus”, in which past and present, story and imagination are all wrapped up in one. A theatre of unexpected appearances, a garden of memories and images from every era.
The title
Promenade was also used for a portfolio made in 2010 (GPE-122).
The original collage on which the print is based is documented in the online Catalogue Raisonné of the works on paper at number GPC-1676.

1 The setting corresponds to the entrance hall of the artist's home, viewed, at a conceptual level, as a space of the representation, as the model for a scenic space (see to this regard the portfolio Contemplator enim, 1991, GPE-0080). The modular structure appears in the manner of a metal construction in the installation of the solo exhibitions hosted at the Christian Stein, Milan, and Yvon Lambert, Paris, galleries in the Fall of 1992, that is to say, during the same period when this print edition was being conceived.
