Documenta GmbH, Kassel

Marco Noire Editore, Turin

The print is part of the first of ten graphic portfolios, titled documenta edition 1992, produced by the Documenta GmbH, Kassel, in support of the ninth edition of the exhibition, curated by Jan Hoet. The portfolios marked with the letters A to J each include six prints (except for F which has only five works) by the artists participating in the exhibition event, using different techniques and formats. Portfolio A includes works by Richard Artschwager, Marco Bagnoli, Jean-Marc Bustamante, Wim Delvoye, Giulio Paolini, and Haim Steinbach.

Originally, the print was contained, along with four other prints, in a double-sided three-flap half-cloth folder, closed format 77 x 58 cm; on the front board titles in black (title and venue of the Documenta IX). The prints are accompanied by a colophon signed by Jan Hoet, curator of the Documenta IX.

Includes the title and the list of artists represented in the portfolio, at bottom centre Jan Hoet's signature and the logo for Documenta IX. Numbering at the centre, preceded by the letter "A" that distinguishes the portfolio.

The silkscreen reproduces the same iconography as the print edition with the same title and made during the same year (Phoenix, 1992, GPE-0084), formulated, however, in a single sheet rather than in nine distinct elements, as if it were the blueprint for the large-scale version.
