Whitechapel Gallery, London

Marco Noire Editore, Turin

The print was conceived by the artist for the Whitechapel Gallery, London – directed at the time by Iwona Blazwick – on the occasion of the solo exhibition Giulio Paolini. To Be or Not to Be, presented from 9 July to 14 September 2014. The graphic editions donated from the artists to the Whitechapel Gallery on the occasion of a solo exhibition were destined for sale to support the museum's exhibition and educational activities.

The male figure in the foreground, viewed from behind, is intent on observing a group of rectangular shapes, while a red rectangle is outlined behind him.
Although directed towards a gallery of “paintings”, the protagonist's gaze – a stand-in for the author in the role of viewer – captures nothing: the painting defined by the gilt frame, at his eye level, is empty, like other paintings, which feature a black surface, a partial view of the sky, or a blank surface. Indeed, the subject is not the vision of a painting, but rather the visual act itself: the gaze turned towards the inscrutable horizon of a painting still to be made.

The theme titled Dopo tutto was born in 2009 and had several variations, developed on paper (GPC-1154, GPC-1155, GPC-1158, GPC-1707, GPC-1785) and in large-scale (GPO-0997, GPO-1121).
The original collage from which the print originates is documented in the online Catalogue Raisonné of the works on paper at number GPC-1389.
