Hand-woven tapestry

122 x 180 cm

The tapestry was executed in three numbered editions.

1/3 Galleria Antonio Verolino, Modena
2/3 Collection of the artist
3/3 Ateliers Pinton, Paris

A male figure seen from behind is intent on observing a painting, suggested by the outline of a rectangle, while in the foreground the image of a gilt frame acts as a frame for the scene overall.
In this alternating succession of frames, the protagonist’s gaze sees nothing, considering that the “painting” that is defined by the gilt frame is located behind him. In the artist’s own words: “The figure represented, rather than turning as usual towards us viewers, occupies our own location: it is turned towards a beyond, towards something that cannot be seen”.

Author and viewer coincide in the same anonymous figure that in a sort of reverse self-portrait seems to question his own gaze as well as his own identity.
The tapestry commissioned from the artist by the Galleria Antonio Verolino in Modena is based on a work on paper from 2011-12 (GPC-1286), part of a series of variants with the same title elaborated between 2009 and 2014.
