Pencil and photo emulsion on canvas

125 x 90 cm

Titled, signed, and dated on the verso, upper left: “2200H / Giulio Paolini 1965”

Kunstmuseum Winterthur, Winterthur

Acquired in 2002, inventory no. G.2002.2

The photo canvas reproduces a primed canvas propped up against several reversed canvases, on which the artist has drawn in pencil (“2200/H” quality) the outline of the same situation framed by the camera lens. The contact between the (de)sign and the blank canvas reproduced in the photograph remains in the distance.
“Photography", Paolini remarked, in retrospect, "is a virtual image, but also a certificate of authenticity, and as such it establishes its rules: taken on as a linguistic code, it forces me to respect these rules, and this is how I find myself ‘photographing it’ in turn. Hence, in
2200/H I am not an inhabitant of my studio, but rather the beholder of the photograph that portrays it, and so to speak the ‘author’ of a representation that preceded me and that I cannot but observe”.1
Strictly complementary to this tautological aspect of photography is the rhetorical figure of the
mise en abîme, also experimented with in other works made in 1965, formulated here in more explicit terms, however.
