The fragments of some of the printer's proofs of a page from the artist’s book titled Sei illustrazioni per gli scritti sull’arte antica di Johann J. Winckelmann (1976, GPE-0030)1 are arranged on two canvases placed close together so as to form a torn image with an elliptical shape. The subject of the image – the Roman decurion intent on contemplating the bust of his son – is set en abîme via a specular doubling, integrated with an inversion of the busts of the father and the son.

1 The image is that of the etching of funerary relief reproduced at the beginning of the second part of the Geschichte der Kunst des Altertums (1764) by J.J. Winckelmann.
