Novero, 1977

GPO-0353

Group

Pencil on primed canvas

Nine parts 30 x 30 cm each, overall dimensions 94 x 94 cm

Signed, titled, and dated on the verso of the ninth canvas, lower stretcher bar: "Giulio Paolini Novero 1977"

Elisabeth and Gerhard Sohst Collection in der Hamburger Kunsthalle

Since ca. 1990 on long-term loan at Hamburger Kunsthalle, Hamburg

The nine canvases numbered from 1 to 9 at the bottom left reproduce each time the pattern of all the elements placed close together, with an empty compartment in the area corresponding to the position of the element in question. Along the same lines as the previously made Delos (1976, GPO-0333), Novero implodes in a circular tale: each component reflects the whole and at the same time signals itself via subtraction by way of the missing square.
The same theme was also developed in four other variants, three of which were made in the same year (GPO-0352, GPO-0368, GPO-0369) while one was made in 1979 (GPO-0405).
