Untitled

Sheet of paper, plywood panel

50 x 50 cm

Signed and dated on the verso, upper left of the sheet of paper: “Giulio Paolini 1965”

Private collection

A sheet of paper stretched across the verso of a slightly larger plywood panel wraps around to the recto just slightly, thus leaving most of the surface of the painting surface uncovered.
The work is part of a series from 1963-64 whose common denominator is the involvement of both the recto and the verso of the painting. It is similar, in particular, to works that make use of plywood or masonite panels with a minimal intervention on the recto (GPO-0038, GPO-0039, GPO-0047, GPO-0048, GPO-0064, GPO-0065). The subtraction of the painting from its function as a vehicle for an image shifts the attention of the painting as such, the support for and the container of a subject that albeit evoked remains an unexpressed presence.
