At the centre of an unprimed canvas a hectograph pencil is used to outline a square painted with white tempera, whose dimensions correspond to half of those of the canvas. The slightly irregular pattern of the outline made by the pencil “copies” the edges of the canvas, thus calling into question the relationship between the painted surface and the canvas containing it.
The theme of the “painting within a painting” is a continuation of the artist's early studies, conducted in 1964 (with a wooden panel suspended at the centre of a larger panel, GPO-0052), and delved into more deeply in 1965 through photography (
Duepiudue e Eterna, GPO-0069, GPO-0070).
