Chimera (III), 1975

GPO-0315

Chimaera (III)

Pencil on primed canvases mounted on reversed canvases

60 x 120 cm (two parts 60 x 60 cm each)

Signed, titled, and dated on the verso of the second canvas, upper right: “Giulio Paolini / Chimera (III) / 1975”

Ugolini Collection, Rome

Two reversed canvases placed one right next to the other contain two primed canvases viewed from the recto, which in turn depict two drawn squares. Through a chimerical interweaving of spatial planes and optical illusions the two overturned canvases become the fourth wall of a room, in which the squares drawn in pencil correspond to two squares located on the rear wall (or even to the image itself of the work we are looking at).
The work is part of a group of three variants made on the same theme during the same year (GPO-0313, GPO-0314, GPO-0315).
