The two parts of the work, called A and B here, are each made up of two juxtaposed plexiglas volumes containing elements complementary to each other.
In part A, arranged inside the upper volume is the first version of Notti bianche, 1990 (GPO-0661), with a mirror instead of the overturned and laid down canvas. At the top, above the upper volume, are two primed canvases that are overlapped so that they are askew and turned in opposite ways (the one on top is upside down).
In part B, the upper volume contains the same black portrait-holder – with the photograph of a man resting his head on his arms – this time placed so that it is lying down upside down, along with two primed canvases askew to one another. Instead, overlapping and askew to one other in the lower volume are a primed canvas and a mirror reflecting the photograph in the portrait-holder.
The game of elements that allude to and reflect one another, while remaining incongruous, further amplifies the state of mind of the protagonist – a stand-in for the author – who is forever awaiting the completion, unpredictable and inexplicable, of his work.
This third version of Notti bianche (cf. GPO-0661 and GPO-0723) was made for the San Carlo shop in Piazza San Carlo in Turin, where the two parts were arranged at a certain distance from each other, thereby constituting two specular moments.
