At the centre of a square primed canvas the image of a black pencil pointing upwards marks the point of origin of a profusion of blank sheets, also square in shape, developed on the wall, as well as of a square the same format as the sheets, outlined in pencil. Both the drawn square and the sheets begin on the canvas and continue moving outwards in illusory continuity.
The moment of contact between the pencil and the sheets is a foretaste of the birth of a hypothetical drawing, announced by the blank canvas. The work thus elevates to subject the instant that presides over its becoming, as also suggested by the title, referred to a sketchbook as a container in nuce of a work in progress.
The same theme was formulated in a previous variant made that same year, featuring the presence of a frame instead of a canvas (GPO-0939).
