Antologia (29/7/1974), 1974
GPO-0270
Anthology (29/7/1974)
Ektachrome colour slide, reversed canvas applied to a primed canvas mounted on a stretcher
130 x 180 cm
Signed, titled, and dated on the verso, upper stretcher bar, left: “Giulio Paolini / Antologia (29/7/1974)”
Private collection
The work consists of an alternating succession of overlapping elements: an ektachrome colour slide of Averroè (GPO-0138) is stuck at an angle in the lower stretcher bar of a reversed canvas, which is in turn mounted in a straight position on a larger primed canvas viewed from the recto, in turn set diagonally on an empty stretcher. Just as Averroè is a flag of flags, thus Antologia is a painting of paintings: an "impossible" painting, suspended between the hypotheses of its countless possibilities of definition.
The same title (at times followed by a different date) was used for a series of eleven works made between 1973 and 1974, each of which cites an anthology of one or more works (GPO-0258, GPO-0259, GPO-0260, GPO-0262, GPO-0263, from GPO-0267 to GPO-0270, GPO-0273, GPO-0274).
