Dismantled work
The photographic reproduction of a monumental staircase features at the centre, in the area corresponding to a gilded frame, a rectangular cut-out allowing the viewer to glimpse the wall behind it. The continuation of the diagonals of this empty “painting” goes beyond the limits of the image, until it merges with the sheets scattered on the wall that appear to have emerged from that blind “window”.
Expelled along the vanishing lines of the red diagonals – alluding to the squaring of Disegno geometrico (1960, GPO-0001) – the sheets are clues in the attempt, which is constantly renewed on the part of the artist, to give a face to the painting, or, rather, to question the possibility itself that it has one at all.
