Early Dynastic (III), 1976

GPO-0324

Michelangelo marble

Four parts h 180 cm each and each with a different number of columns placed one on top of the other, overall dimensions 180 x 180 x 180 cm

Kröller-Müller Museum, Otterlo

Acquired in 1984, inventory no. KM 126.912

Four marble elements are arranged so that they are equidistant from each other, according to an oblique pattern with respect to the axes of the room. From one element to another the number of overlapping columns changes, going from one to four with a gradual reduction in their size as well – each column is equal in height to half of the column it supports – so that each of the four elements together achieves the same height.
The work constitutes the third of five variants – as indicated by the numbering in the title – made between 1971 and 1993 (GPO-0228, GPO-0257, GPO-0324, GPO-0399, GPO-0713). In 1977 a travertine version was reproduced as well (GPO-0354).
