GPO-0132
Untitled
Ink on paper applied to primed canvas
Ø 110 cm
Signed and dated on the verso, upper stretcher bar: “Giulio Paolini / 1967”
Private collection, Biella
A linear cross traced freehand on a sheet of paper and torn to resemble a cross is located at the centre of the circular canvas as if seeking its own point of balance.
In this sense, the work is comparable to other works from the same year based on a rotatory dynamic, and legible as the “still-image” of an action aimed at an ideal point of stability (cf. the works Alceo, GPO-0110, Decima musa, GPO-0111, Capitemi!, GPO-0112 made in 1966, and Atlante, as well as Ex acto, GPO-0133 and GPO-0134, and Astrolabe, GPO-0125 and GPO-0127, in 1967). In particular, it can be compared to two other works from 1967 consisting of round canvases characterized by an intervention at the centre: Morire/Mourir/To Die e Amore/Amour/Love (GPO-0128, GPO-0129).
The same theme was previously formulated in a small-scale version, made in 1966 on an acetate round shape (GPC-0061).
