Omissis, 1997
GPO-1129
Bound book with blank pages, collage on paper, blank sheets
80 x 100 cm
Titled, signed, and dated on the verso, centre: “ “Omissis” / Giulio Paolini / 1997”
Private collection, Verona
The installation of the work calls for it to be arranged on a table or a plinth or some other neutral support base, along with a protective case (ca. 10 x 80 x 100 cm).
Arranged on top of a bound book with blank pages in an open position are four photographs of the artist’s hand and five blank sheets – which appear to be held down by those same hands – while half-hidden underneath the book are three blank sheets of drawing paper.
In the artist’s own words: "The presence of the hand, the sheets that are still blank: it is the itinerary that reveals all that will make up the work, that is, its own path before reaching fruition. The path of the hand without the work knowing”.1
The legal term in the title is meant to refer to the “mute” and scattered sheets, which do not refer anything.
The same theme was developed in a later version with the same title (GPO-0803).
